Don Dramstad passes, March 28, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that the National Capital Dahlia Society reports the death of long-time member, Don Dramstad.  Don died March 28, 2024 at his winter home in Florida.  At Don’s request, there will be no funeral.  Rhonda plans to have a celebration of Don’s life in the fall during dahlia season.

Don joined the National Capital Dahlia Society in 1994.  Over the years, he was instrumental in getting the NCDS to participate in the Leesburg Flower and Garden Festival, which turned out to be one of our biggest fundraisers of the year.  He served two different terms as NCDS President. He and Rhonda hosted the NCDS annual picnic at their home in Waterford for many years, which was always well attended as his garden was unbelievable.  In later years, Don was not as active due to health reasons.

Don was also active in the American Dahlia Society.  He served as President, as well as Second Vice President.   He was currently serving as the Immediate Past President. At the 2022 National Show in Reston, David Brown presented Don with a National Dahlia Society (UK) Silver medal in 2022 for his work with the ADS and dahlias in general.

In later years, Don turned growing dahlias into a business.  He and Rhonda could be seen at the Leesburg Farmers Market each Saturday and he began growing dahlias for weddings. He had also provided blooms for use at a White House State Dinner.

Don was a mentor to many in the dahlia world and will be sorely missed.

Condolences may be sent to Rhonda at 14350 Loyalty Rd., Leesburg, VA 20176 or by email, Rhonda Dramstad

Rest in peace dahlia friend.
