48th Annual - American Dahlia Society Show
Hosted by the Federation of Northwest Dahlia Growers
August 28 – September 1, 2014
The venue for the 2014 ADS l Show is the Greater Tacoma Convention Center in downtown Tacoma. This facility has spectacular views of Mount Rainier and Commencement Bay; it is located a few blocks north of the University of Washington Tacoma Campus. East of the facility is the Washington State History Museum and the Tacoma Glass Museum, all within walking distance. The spectacular Lemay Car Museum is a short transit ride away. This part of Tacoma has defiantly seen a renaissance in the past few years with a number of new attractions and restaurants. The following links will give you a sample of what you might enjoy during your visit to Tacoma:
Directly across the street from the Convention Center is the Courtyard by Marriot which is the show hotel. There will be no need for shuttle buses or private cars to get you to and from the show site. We have negotiated a special room rate of $136.00 per room plus taxes per night with breakfast included for two people. There are a limited number of rooms available so you will want to make your reservations early. You will be able to make your hotel reservations using the information printed in the ADS Bulletin or available on Federation website at nwdahlia.org.
Saturday morning is the featured event – the dahlia show. We are counting on thousands of blooms to be on display from all parts of Pacific Northwest and maybe a few from even farther away. The dahlias will be judged on Saturday morning and winners will be announced at the Banquet and Awards Ceremony on Saturday night. After the judging on Saturday morning there will be a luncheon. This will be followed by seminars on dahlia related topics later in the afternoon. Even if you are local you will want to stay in the show hotel on Saturday night as you will be having a busy day and usually the fun lasts until late in the evening.
For show exhibitors the Convention Center will be open from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm on Friday night, August 29th and again on Saturday morning, August 30th from 6:00 am till 9:30 am. The judging of the show will commence at 10:00 am. The dahlia show will be open to the public from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Saturday, August 30th and 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Sunday, August 31st.
Even if you are focused on showing your prize winning dahlias on Saturday you should not forget about the featured tours. These tours are a unique opportunity to see the gardens of some of the premier growers and showers in the region. This is a chance to mingle with some of the best growers and showers from around North American and even the world. The tour schedule for 2014 ADS National Show is:
- South Tour (Thursday, August 28th) – takes you to the gardens of Roland Verrone (Verrone’s Pride of the Prairie Dahlias), Wayne Lobaugh (Lobaugh Dahlias) and Dan Pearson (Dan’s Dahlias).
- Local Tour ( Friday, August 29th) – takes you to the Tacoma Trial Garden, the gardens of Les and Vivian Connell (Tahoma introductions) and the gardens of Ken and Marilyn Walton (Narrows introductions).
- North Tour (Monday, September 1st ) – takes you to the gardens of Al Kaas (Maks Dahlias), Dick and Danielle Parshall (Clearview Dahlias) and Ken Greenway (Accent Dahlias).
With a line up like this there is no reason for you not being able to take at least one tour during the show. The cost is $40.00 per tour.
PLEASE NOTE: We have been distributing National Show “Free Admission” tickets as a way of publicizing and promoting the show, which is ALWAYS free to the public. However, these tickets do not take the place of registration fees. If you are planning to show, go on any tours, or attend the Saturday luncheon or awards banquet, National Show registration (exhibitor or full) is required.
In addition there are a number of local dahlia shows before and after the ADS National Show. On August 23-24, the Vancouver, BC Dahlia Society has their show at Van Dusen Gardens, and the Puget Sound Dahlia Association will have their show in Seattle. On the weekend after, September 6 & 7, there are 3 local dahlia shows sponsored by the Seattle, South Sound, and Whatcom County dahlia clubs. So begin now to plan your visit by marking these show dates on your calendar.
So come and plan your vacations to enjoy and experience the beautiful Northwest Treasures for a lifetime of dahlia memories and friends.
