========================================================================= FAQ - Submitting Photos to the online Classification & Handbook of Dahlia ========================================================================= Introduction: Because of the time and costs involved in scanning and uploading new images, we are being pretty militant about photo submissions. We hope that these extra steps do not deter you from adding your photographs to the online listing, and look forward to your contributions. With your help, very soon, we hope to have over two thousand Dahlia photos online. The biggest problem with putting pictures online is not collecting the photos. The problem is identifying, book checking, labeling, scanning, uploading, and adding the image to the database. Even a couple photos can take up to an hour of work to put online. We've created this list of Frequently Asked Questions for anyone who would like to submit photos. Please follow these guidelines to help us stay organized. Frequently Asked Questions; 1) I have a shoebox full of photos do you want them? Maybe, but because of the time and cost involved in scanning and posting the images, we ask that you do some homework for us. For each photo please: - Verify the Variety name and Classification with the latest ADS book and/or the online listing. - Check that we do not already have a image of that variety online. - On the back of the photograph print or type the Variety name and its Classification. - On the back of the photograph print or type your name, address, and the date the picture was taken. - Complete and sign the Waiver Form. 2) Why the Waiver Form? The Waiver Form is to protect me, my employers, my clients, and the ADS. The database is not set up to track photo credits, restrictions, or ownership of individual images. This would add several layers of problems and liabilities. We can only accept photos unconditionally. If copyrights or photo credits are important to you, we're sorry but we can't use your photos. 3) I have some photos which someone else took for me... or gave to me...? We need the photographer to sign a waiver too. See above. 4) Do you want slides, negatives, or prints? What size? We'd prefer scanned images in JPEG image files. :) ... or send prints. We currently cannot scan slides or negatives. A 3"x5" print on glossy paper would be best. There is no need for enlargements. 5) I have a scanner/digital camera, do you want my image files? Yes. The same restrictions apply as above. They need to be _your_ photos, and we need a signed Waiver Form. The best images are in JPEG format, about 400x200 pixels, in full 24bit color, and compressed about 75 percent. The file sizes should be about 30K. We've also been successful in converting images from Kodak Photo-CD's, if that is what you have. If your system cannot support long filenames, please include a README.TXT or INDEX.HTM file which lists the Variety and Classification along with the abbreviated filename.JPG. If your system does support long filenames, name each file with the variety name in capital letters replacing spaces the underscores (_). i.e. "AKITA_NO_HIKARI.jpg" Please U.S.Mail floppies of 20-30 images, or we can FTP individual images directly from your Internet site. Please do not e-mail images! The mailing address is: Andrew Miller 47447 San Clemente Terrace Fremont, CA 94539 6) Can I get my photos returned? Only for large contributions. Please contact us for details. We'd prefer to hold on to most photos in case they need to be rescanned, digital image technology improves, or copyright issues ever arise. 7) What if the Varieties in my photos aren't listed in the current ADS book/online? Because of disk space, we have to limit the images to listed Varieties. 8) Of which Varieties do you need pictures? Our first goal is to get quality images of all Fab-50/Hart/Dudley/Johnson winners listed in the 20 year and current ADS book. Look at the Awards pages. Any variety listed without a little camera icon next to it needs a photograph. The search program has been enhanced to list all varieties for which we need photographs. Access the URL below for a quick listing; http://www.dahlia.org/cgi-bin/guide/dahlmain.cgi?NoImage=1 9) What if my photo is better than the one you already have online? There is a lot of work involved in replacing images, and we'd rather concentrate on collecting photos of varieties which we don't already have in the collection. However, we realize that some of images are less than ideal and would like to have quality photographs of all varieties. If you have a quality photo to replace an obviously poor existing image, note on the back of the photo that it is a replacement for an existing image. Images will only be replaced if the new image is a _significant_ improvement over the existing image. It should more correctly represent the form, color, and habit of that Variety. ========================================================================== WAIVER FORM I hereby grant to the public unconditional rights of use, duplication, transformation, and/or distribution for the photograph(s) of the dahlia(s) labeled ________________________ taken by me on or about __________. {varieties} {date} ---------------------------------------------- -------------- ---------------------------------------------- -------------- ---------------------------------------------- -------------- ---------------------------------------------- -------------- ---------------------------------------------- -------------- ---------------------------------------------- -------------- ---------------------------------------------- -------------- ---------------------------------------------- -------------- ---------------------------------------------- -------------- ---------------------------------------------- -------------- ---------------------------------------------- -------------- ---------------------------------------------- -------------- ---------------------------------------------- -------------- ---------------------------------------------- -------------- ---------------------------------------------- -------------- I waive all copyrights to these photo(s), and hold harmless Mr. Miller his employers, his Internet service providers, and The American Dahlia Society and its officers and members past and present for any use or misuse of these photograph(s).
