Editing Photographs for the ADS Website Online Guide

Picture Name

The ADS Online Dahlia Classification Guide requires a very specific photo naming protocol in order to be able to display the pictures with the dahlia listing. The name for the photo must be identical to the name of the flower; the name must be in all capital letters; any spaces in the name must be replaced with an underscore symbol; and the file extension must be .jpg in lower case letters. Thus, Hamari_Accord.jpg, HAMARI_ACCORD.JPG, HAMARI ACCORD.jpg, will not work. The name of the picture of Hamari Accord must be titled HAMARI_ACCORD.jpg in order for it to work in the Online Guide.

Picture Size

It is our expectation that these images will only ever be seen on a computer screen or a hand held device. There is no reason to have large picture files for those applications. Further, large picture files will slow down the operation of this very large software system. Consequently, large files will not be accepted. The recommended picture size is less than 50kb with a width less than or equal to 640 pixels.

Editing Photographs Using Microsoft Live Photo Gallery

There are many photo editing systems available. Virtually all PCs come with Microsoft’s Live Photo Gallery. Here are some suggestions on how to use that system if you are unfamiliar with the process of editing your photos. You need to start by getting your photos into the Photo Gallery files. If that is not your basic photo file manager, you can import or copy the pictures you want to send to ADS from your storage location (file, camera, memory device, etc.) and drop them in Photo Gallery. Once there, select the picture you want to edit and click on the “Edit” tab. Under the “Properties” button in the “organize” column, you will find Rename and Resize. (Your particular version of Photo Gallery may be slightly different; find “Rename” and “Resize,” in any case.) Click and “Rename” the picture first, following the instructions above exactly. Then go back to the “Properties” button and click on “Resize.” Choose “Smaller: 640,” then click on “Resize and Save.”
