There is a Quarterly Magazine - 'Dahlias'
State show Last weekend February.

"The NDSV has 350 members including 20 overseas; there are also 30 affiliated clubs and societies. The Society meets monthly from August to May where a variety of guest speakers cover horticultural and dahlia matters. There is a members' tuber auction in October and a public one in November.

The highlight of the year is our Annual Show, the last weekend in February, which is very well patronised by the public. Over the years we have enjoyed the services of overseas judges including Dr Keith Hammett (NZ) and Norman Flint (UK).

Victoria is the smallest of the Australian mainland States with an average rainfall of 20 inches a year, Our capital, Melbourne, has low frost danger though outer suburbs and country areas can receive severe frosts. We have a Mediterranean climate of fairly mild Winters but Summers with occasional or prolonged bursts of 40C heat.

Many dahlias raised in Victoria have become international. Gar Davidson of Bairnsdale Vic, the raiser of "Glenbank Twinkle" has been awarded the Stanley Johnson medal for the most higher awards in the US. Other successes include Frank Rossack's "Susan French" &"Desert Lodge". "Pop Harris" 1942, known as "Liberator" in the UK and from 1948 there is "Rose Fletcher". Present raisers include Frank Turton ("Northfield Sparkler"), Bob Yeomans ("Aussie Sunrise"), Joe Daniel ("Rokewood Opal") and there are members developing the anemone type and scented blooms.

The Society maintains a dahlia bed in the famed Melbourne Botanic Gardens where many varieties are displayed. It is well visited; a group of American dahlia enthusiasts led by Les Connell visited in 2000."
